		<description>How about starting with a dowel, cut it into widths you need using hand tools. If you need it cored, use a hand drill.

Otherwise, get some power tools.</description>

		<description>even in the days of old lathes were used to make dowels.  they were foot powered lathes.  you could try a spoke shave but i doubt that you would be happy with the results.</description>
