What are the best types of wood for turning on a wood lathe?

When I was in Woodshop we used pine for practice pieces and cherry, oak, or maple for finished projects. I prefer maple because I remember that it didn’t splinter much.

Most hardwoods seem to be easier to use in a lathe because of the fine grain.Try to obtain old newel posts from a reclaimation yard.
