oh, yes, thats what machineries handbook says. however, on small parts, I and many others I have spoken with have found that its just not enough rigidity sometimes, but if you like flexing parts that wont meet tolerance, or if you like the sound of chatter, knock yourself out!-)

tailstock! any time the work is extending more than 1.5 times its diameter! but dang cool also, its cnc, loose the compoun and gain some distance between the spindle and the cross slide! you will gain at least an inch or so of addiional clearance, and gain rigidity since you would remove a manual axis. and computer interpolation of the two liniar axis eliminates the need for a compound in every situation I can think of, though its may be nice for fast tool compensation.
