How do you stop a flat belt on a lathe from shredding?

In the old days we used to apply belt soap, not sure if you can still get it tho

Use a belt dressing. It will keep the material hydrated and prevent the shredding from wear. There are specialized products for this, but using a glycerine soap works well.
