A new Chinese made lathe, geared head,13 inch swing x 30 between centres. Reassembled from new by me in the UK. Mostly well made components, but dreadful assembly in China of headstock and apron internals in particular. Rust, casting sand and swarf, it was all in there and its not the only new one found like this. So beware if your thinking of buying and lift the headstock cover first. If there is any sign of rust on gears and shafts reject it. All eight bearings in the headstock of my …

Camlocks have a special spindle with a short external taper surrounded by at least three locating holes with internal cams. The backplate has a matching internal taper and short steel pins sticking out the back with a radius machined on one side of them. The pins locate in the spindle holes and the cams, when rotated, pull the backplate tightly onto the taper and the front face of the spindle holding it square and central.

Must ask, since you seem to know stuff; are camlock backplates fitted onto the spindle nose thread, or do the req. a special spindle? I dearly want to upgrade, having only one full size lathe, changing chucks is a hassle!

Thats the 12 speed belt drive lathe with back gear, they have a good spec and can be good machines when sorted. The tidiest versions over here are sold by Warco and more recently Toolco. Chesters Craftsman, sold here for many years, has always looked a bit rough and ready when compared to others. On these Chinese machines what we save in cash we pay for later in time and trouble.

Ive got a lathe called Eaysturn 178, its sold as The Craftsman or other names in the UK, by Chester and Warco. Mine is german imported. Its a good machine, but some small cast components have cracked and failed. I agree these lathes has to be refurbished while still new, they are sort of “lathe kits” imho!
