I have a Harbor Freight 7x10 mini lathe and just recently the auto feed won't engage properly. I've made a lot of pretty cool things and everything normally works well but I'm fairly new to using this and not sure what may be going on. It has the lever you flip down which engages a piece upwards into the worm gear to make it work. If, when I flip the lever down I also push up on this piece it will engage and stay engaged as long as I keep up pressure with my finger. Any ideas? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

hello all, I'm new to the forums, and to lathes in general. I'll be purchasing one in march, mostly for shop/hobby with the main purpose of doing pool cue repair. The benchtop lathes would be perfect for what I want to do but I need a spindle bore of at least 1 3/8" to fit the butt of the stick through to do joint work. The only machines I have found that have this large of a spindle bore are large, heavy, and expensive. Way overkill for what I want. Would I be able to modify a smaller lathes' spindle bore to make it larger or are there any smaller lathes with larger spindle bores on the market? Remember, this is just a hobby so I'm not looking at spending a ton, most of the lathes I was looking are in the 500 dollar and 300 lb range, but I'm a little flexible. Thanks guys!

I am 56 yrs old and am considering a Grizzly G4003G gunsmith lathe as my first lathe for personal use.
I am new to lathe work and have always wanted one. I plan on taking a course at our local community college and I am looking at this lathe because I would like to do barrel work and this one has the features I think are useful. This lathe is really more money than I want to spend but I really like its features and I don't want to be disappointed later. This is likely my first and last lathe.
Problem is that after looking at the space requirements, from the owners manual that I downloaded, it calls for a minumum of 60" from the wall to the front of the lathe.
Is this much room really needed? The lathe it self is only 36" deep (drip pan). The room I plan on placing it in is only 10' W x 13' L.
I would be placing the lathe along the 10' wall due to the door way being at the end of this room. This would allow long stock access to the spindle hole if need be, although this is unlikely.
The other potential problem is I would like to place this lathe in a basement bedroom. I don't see a problem with access to the basement due to wide staircase and open areas getting it in the house. The problem is the weight.
How would people on this forum get the lathe down the stairs? The weight of the lathe appears to be 1066 lbs. The stand is in 2 pieces and should'n't be a problem.

hello i have a samona Multi-Purpose Machine AT520 mill/lathe i am having trouble selecting the right gears to cut threads
if anbody has one or knows how to choose the right gears for this machine
i would appreciate any help

for 24threads per inch i choose

i follow the manual and choose c gear50 teeth and
d gear 27 teeth
even b gear is 60 teeth
but when i choose the a gear of 36teeth

a and be do not mesh they are to small

the drawing is very hard to understand please help

Hi,
Can a person use a 20" lathe to cut threads on a barrel by running the barrel thru the spindel bore hole and using a steady rest?
Thanks I am new to lathe operations but it seam that for an occasional threading job this would work. This would help in not having to purchase such a large lathe.
